Bihar Festivals


Indian festivals are celebrated with great excitement and enthusiasm. Festivals in Bihar India are also celebrated with great happiness & pride. Especially Cultural festivals have an important place in Bihar Festivals. These festivals generate new energy and break the monotony of our day-to-day life.

Chatth Puja

Chatth Puja is one of the most important festivals in Bihar India. The uniqueness of this festival is that the God sun (Surya Devta) is worshipped. People of Bihar celebrate this festival with great devotion and faith.

Though this Indian festival is celebrated twice a year, Once in Chaitra (according to the Hindu calendar) which falls in March and in Kartik which falls in November. Chatth Puja celebrated in Kartik is the most famous one.

This is a 4 day festival. Cleanliness and purity is maintained from even a month before. The whole area is decorated and during this time one could listen to Folk Songs, dedicated to Surya Devta, anywhere around this area.

Sama-Chakeva

Sama-Chakeva is celebrated when the colourful birds from the Himalayas migrate towards the plains. This festival is celebrated especially in Mithila region during the winter season. The people of Mithila dedicate this festival to celebrate the brother sister relationship. This Indian festival is started by welcoming the pair of birds sama- chakeva. Girls make idols of various birds with clay and decorate those birds in their own traditional way. During the period of festival many traditional rituals are performed and the festival joyfully ends with the going back of these birds with a wish that these birds return next year.

Ram Navami

Ram Navami is celebrated with full enthusiasm in all parts of the country. On this auspicious day Lord Rama was born. This is one of Indian Festivals celebrated in Bihar with great dedication and happiness.

Makar-Sankranti

Every year it is celebrated 14th January. This festival marks the beginning of the summer season. This is a common belief that from this day on, the days becomes longer and the heat of the sun also increases. People celebrate it by eating Chura, Curd and Til.

Bihula

This is one of the well known Bihar festivals and is celebrated in eastern part especially in the Bhagalpur district. People pray to goddess Mansa for the wellbeing of their family members.

Madhushravani

Madhushravani is a festival celebrated in the month of Sawan (Hindu calendar) the month of August. The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over Mithilanchal. The festival carries a message that is it teaches us how we should keep religion and tradition together in our day to day life.

Teej

Teej is celebrated by women in Bihar for the long life of their husbands.
The other festivals which are also celebrated with same joy and happiness are Basant Panchami, Shivratri, Raksha Bandhan, Holi, Durga Puja, Deepawali, Id, Bakrid, Christmas etc.

Apart from Cultural Festivals Bihar offers beautiful Fairs galore -

Sonepur Fair

Sonepur is situated at the meeting point of river Ganga and Gandak. Sonepur perhaps hosts the Asia's Biggest animal fair, which starts from Kartik full moon day (Oct./Nov). The Fair lasts for almost a fortnight. Many tourists come from different parts of world to enjoy this amazing fair.

Pitrapaksha Mela

This is held at Gaya (Bihar) in the month of September. People from all over the world gather for having a 'Pindadaan'. Every person prays god that he has a son who offers him pinda daan (lymph of rice) at Gaya. The 'Pindaadan' offered here by the relatives of the dead is a must for the 'moksha' of the soul and carries a huge importance in Hindu Religion.
